For their topic ‘Under the Sea’ Reception Woodpeckers have been looking at plastic pollution in the ocean.
The children watched a demonstration of ocean pollution. A big tub was filled with water, shells, sea creatures etc and the class discussed how this was a good environment for the fish. Then gradually they added litter- plastic straws, a plastic bag, tangerine net, ‘oil’ etc.
Woodpeckers saw that the creatures all got caught in the plastic and the oil meant the water was not clear. They then discussed why it is so important not to litter and also to recycle. To learn about recycling, they used plastic bottles to make our own fish with tissue paper, gems and googly eyes.
The Woodpeckers saw that there is a way to take the things they no longer want (i.e., rubbish) and turn it into something else.
