Exploring Instrument Families & the Orchestra in Years 3 & 4

In music lessons this term, pupils in Years 3–6 have been exploring the different families of musical instruments. They had the exciting opportunity to play a range of instruments, including the flute, trombone, acoustic bass, violin and a variety of percussion instruments.

Throughout the unit, children learned how to identify instruments and group them into their correct families. They also developed their listening skills by listening to different instruments and guessing which family they belonged to.

In addition, we explored the science of sound, discovering how sound is created through vibrations and how our ears detect these vibrations so we can hear.

It has been wonderful to see the pupils’ curiosity, enthusiasm, and growing confidence in both their musical understanding and practical skills.
