Learning at Key Stage 2
The curriculum at this level is built around the framework of the National Curriculum guidelines, which we take as a starting point. We take every opportunity to exceed the national average while continuing to emphasise the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Specialist teachers continue throughout Key Stage 2 and there is a good staff-pupil ratio that is beneficial to our more personalised learning programme.
Our SENDCo and her team ensures that we stretch and challenge appropriately with our Gifted and Talented programme. Similarly, those pupils who need additional support are given the option of one-to-one tuition, or specialist dyslexia tuition.
At 11+ we prepare pupils thoroughly for entrance exams for local senior schools. We are confident they will cope successfully with life beyond Oaklands due to our outstanding preparation for a seamless transition. In recent years our Year 6 pupils have moved on to such schools as Normanhurst, Chigwell, Bancroft’s, Forest, Brentwood, Davenant, St Edmunds, West Hatch, Roding Valley and Haileybury.
Academic Subjects at Key Stage 2
Our Key Stage 2 pupils continue the rich and varied curriculum that was started in Key Stage 1. They are taught in smaller class sizes, creating a good staff-pupil ratio beneficial to a more personalised learning programme.
We take every opportunity to challenge our pupils to think for themselves and to participate readily in the classroom. We encourage them to discuss their learning and to understand how to make further progress.
Specialist teachers continue to take subjects such as French, PE/Games, ICT, Dance, Science and Music so that the class teachers can concentrate on the core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Humanities.
