Year 5 Trip… to the Sewers!

On Thursday 6 July Year 5 went on a trip with a difference! We spent the day at Chelmsford Water Recycling Centre learning about how dirty water is treated and recycled. In addition to a site tour where we got to see all of the different filters and treatment tanks in action, the children made their very own sewage soup filled with all of the sorts of substances that you would find in real sewage – including those that shouldn’t be in there!

We learnt how to be sewage wise and why it is so important to use drains only as they should be used. Later in the day we used a digital microscope to observe the different micro-organisms that were present in a sample taken from one of the tanks and used as bio-filters to feed off the sewage and clean the water. It was a very informative and interesting day for both children and adults, and definitely a trip we won’t be forgetting soon!
