Year 5’s Outdoor Classroom Project

An impromptu discussion in the playground turned into a mini-project for the Year 5’s, as they wanted to reinvent the outdoor classroom. They started by drawing and labelling a plan, followed by a written description of their vision.

Ideas included awnings for use in inclement weather, a whiteboard for the teacher, storage boxes to include binoculars, magnifying glasses and bug identifiers, tables and chairs to work on, rugs and cushions to make it cosy and even a dog bed for Dexter! After they had identified their needs, the Year 5’s then went down to measure up for awnings, wood and storage boxes. This was a fantastic learning experience which incorporated real life maths.
