On Wednesday 27 September year 4 went to Hatfield Forest as part of their work on Mapping. In the morning they learnt how to use a compass. They navigated the forest walking on bearings and pacing out the route. It was a bit of a challenge at first, but they soon got used to moving the bezel to locate the right direction. On their walk they saw rides, many different types of tree that they identified with their field guide and even a reptile hibernaculum. After lunch they used a map of the forest to find specific locations where code letters had been hidden. Highlights of the afternoon were admiring the beautiful lake and the giant red wood tree. Everyone got involved reading the map and gathering all the information they could see around them to help them work out exactly where they were.
